Framing guide
Finding the right frame.
Every print is sold unframed, in a standard A size, so it fits a ready-made frame from almost anywhere. A few notes to help it look its best.
Which size to buy
Buy the frame in the same size as the print. The sizes are standard, so the frame will say A4, A3 or A2 on the label.
- A4 print
A4 frame, 21 × 29.7 cm
- A3 print
A3 frame, 29.7 × 42 cm
- A2 print
A2 frame, 42 × 59.4 cm
No mount needed
Most of our prints have an ivory border around the image, which does the work a mount (the card border inside a frame) usually does. If your frame comes with a mount, take it out: a border inside a border looks doubled.
The signature print is the exception. It runs to the edge of the paper, so it works with or without a mount. Without one, the frame's lip covers a few millimetres at each edge, and nothing important sits there.
Choosing a finish
Keep the frame quieter than the print. A thin, plain moulding suits the prints better than anything carved or glossy.
- Natural oak
Warm and calm. Suits the lighter prints and rooms with wood, linen and plants.
- Black
Sharp and graphic. Suits the darker prints, and white or pale walls.
- Dark green
Deep and quiet, close to our own forest green. Lovely on warm, earthy walls.
Glass
Ordinary glass or acrylic both work. Archival Matte has no sheen of its own, so any reflection comes from the glazing; in a bright room, non-reflective glazing is worth the small extra cost.
Hanging it
Hang a print so its centre is at about eye level, roughly 145 to 150 cm from the floor. Above a sofa or a bed, leave a hand's width, about 20 cm, between the bottom of the frame and the furniture.
If your print arrives rolled, let it rest flat under a couple of books for a day before framing. Handle it by the edges, with clean, dry hands.
